Different Types of Infertility Medications

Clomiphene Citrate

Clomid®, Serophene®: This oral medication stimulates ovulation or triggers the development of more than one follicle; each follicle produces the hormones estrogen and progesterone and releases an egg.

GnRH Agonists

Lupron®: This fertility drug suppresses natural ovulation during an IVF cycle. It works by preventing your pituitary gland from producing luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

GnRH Antagonists

Ganirelix acetate™, Cetrotide®: These drugs complement the actions of Follistim® and Gonal F®. GnRH antagonists work by preventing the premature release of the eggs from the follicles.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)

Novarel®, Profasi®, Pregnyl ®, Ovidrel®: This injectable hormone triggers the final stage of maturation and release of the eggs.

Human Recombinant FSH (hrFSH)

Follistim®, Gonal F®: The fertility specialists at Nobel Fertility Center administer this medication to stimulate development of your follicles.

Progesterone

Prometrium®, Progesterone-: Maintains the health of the endometrium, which is the mucus membrane lining the inside of your womb. Our New York infertility specialists may recommend progesterone vaginal suppositories, oil, or intramuscular injection after you have undergone intrauterine insemination, egg retrieval, or have received a donor egg or frozen embryo.
